Travel Roll Bag
I am flying with a 9 month old. I don't want to be a parent with the screaming child....travel tips?
I've never wanted to be one of those parents with the screaming baby. But I'm sorry fellow travelers--it might just be me. Not for my lack of preperation though, I am trying to be considerate and think ahead. Can anyone recommend a good, large rolling bag that will fit under the seat? I want to pack it with goodies (food, toys, diapers, etc). I'm hoping that I can help my son as we take off by feeding him--he does not take a pacifer so hopefully sucking on a bottle will help. As for in flight activities...well, I am still brainstorming. Books, and toys will only last so long. And I can't afford a DVD player or bring my laptop. If anyone has experience traveling with a baby and found a particular toy helpful or anything that might help me as I fly across country (two 4 hour flights). I am flying American Airlines during the first part of the trip, and United the return home.
My best answer, after traveling 16 hours with a 6 month old and 7 hours with a 1 year old (car trips) are stay in sight and get her as absolutely exhausted as you can.
It's going to be a scary time for her (or him, I'm going to use her here), and it really depends on the temperament of the baby and if you breastfeed or not. I've personally had success with helping my baby pop her ears with feeding because it calmed her and the gulping popped her ears. A bottle won't be as effective but I'm sure it'll help, too.
Try to bring things that will calm her, a cotton shirt you've rolled around in should be used as a blanket so that the baby constantly smells you and knows you're near. I think book reading and singing are the best bets. A DVD might be eye candy, but it's just going to add to the unfamiliar noises and isn't as calming as your own voice. A calming musical toy like one of those night-time animals that she can have close might help.
I've never been on a plane with a baby so I don't know how often you'll be able to hold her, so I'd say if you can hold her, do it a lot. A tired, snuggled baby is going to be easier to handle than an awake, totally fussy and bored baby.
Just know that in the end, if the baby is super fussy and can't be calmed, PLEASE don't get upset yourself or be concerned with anyone around you. The worst thing you can do is get upset because then you are letting off 'vibes' that your baby can feel and hear in your voice. So just stay calm, and create a little world for you and your baby. That angry old man can use headphones/ear plugs.
